South Pacific Cauldron: World War II's Great Forgotten Battlegrounds

South Pacific Cauldron is the first complete history embracing all land, sea, and air operations in the Pacific War. Unlike most other World War II accounts, this work covers the South Pacific operations in detail. The audiobook includes many now-forgotten operations that deserve to be well remembered. Significantly, the official Australian history of World War II correctly observed that Australia's part in the Pacific war is barely mentioned in American histories.

This volume finally brings the major Australian contribution to the fore. The dramatis personae could hardly be improved upon, including brilliant and imperious General Douglas MacArthur, audacious and profane Admiral William "Bull" Halsey, and bibulous and indelicate Australian General Thomas Blamey. As for the fighting men, many of their stories are captured in accounts of the actions for which they were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, Victoria Cross, and other decorations for valor.

For the most part this is an excellent introduction to one of the bloodiest, yet least remembered, theaters of World War II. If there is any criticism, it is that Rems tried to cover too much - after all, there are books about PORTIONS of the Guadalcanal campaign, whereas it's only one chapter here. But there are no knocks on Rems's prose, as it is clear, informative, and insightful. The personalities, and how they interacted, are also colorful, as might be expected of a colonial backwater - Halsey, McArthur, and the ANZAC commanders tapdance around each other in struggles over strategy and superiority, and not always to good end. It is the fighting men, though, who are the true stars - an astonishing number of CMH's and VC's were handed out, often for acts of supreme sacrifice - and yet I dare anyone outside of professional geographers to even remember the many places where they fought and died. And sometime for reasons that are very much less than clear.

If you like military histories, I think you will like this book. The author writes clearly about the various phases of the South Pacific campaigns. He has a very good sense of command issues (split commands, commands of another nation's troops and "force command" problems) and how objectives were set in this theater. The author's evaluations of the high commanders (e.g., MacArthur, Nimitz, and the Australian General Blimey) confirmed what I had long suspected. Overall, a very good summary of this part of World War II.

As I read the first chapter, I wanted to quit. As I got into the second chapter, I felt the same way. But I kept reading and the more I read, the more interesting it I found it. The author is relating little known battles and the politics of war, especially among those in a command and the petty jealousies.I'm used to reading memoirs and the experiences of individual stories, by a soldier or group. If you're looking for that type of book, this is not the one for you. This is a history book. The one criticism I have is Mr. Rems has way too much detailed information packed into a book less than 350 pages long. Still though, it's worth reading. Heck, until this book, I never knew there was a Guppy Island, let alone a fight there.

Interesting and informative, at least to me (except for Guadalcanal, very few television documentaries address activity in the South Pacific and Southwest Pacific - unfortunately, my primary source of WW2 history apparently has been television)

In my business dealings , I was fortunate to reach the inner circle. That's what I like so much about this book. With the detail garnered from biographies and personal letters , the book seems to place me in the inner circle and I feel like I'm making the decisions with the Generals and Admirals.. Hats off for the inricate research this book obviously entailed.

Having always wondered what happened in the South Pacific theatre after the focus of the Pacific war moved toward the Central Pacific and here is a great summary of the forgotten or less publicized battles in the South Pacific all the way through Japan's surrender. The volume is well researched and a great summary. That said, the summary is just that, and leaves the reader wanting more depth. A commendable effort that illuminates a later forgotten theater of the war.

Well researched and written story of ground combat in the Pacific Theater of Operation that normally gets little mention. Covers not only US troops and battles but our allies, the Australians and New Zealanders. Naval, air and ground operations are included.

Boring! Just names and numbers in a monotone voice.
