In this book, Nuttall adds a satisfying volume to the "A Learning Experience" series of books which describe the emergence of humanity onto the cosmic stage. In this book, Captain Hoshiko Stuart gets sent to a system six months away from the Solar Union as punishment for speaking out of turn to the media. Of course, like her counterpart Honor Harrington, she makes the most of her detached duty basing her decisions to start and support an alliance against a genocidal species on ethical beliefs. She has guts and know that her choices may condemn her once command authority requires her to justify what she's done. Even so, she makes the choice to do what is right in her eyes. If you enjoy the Harrington or Hornblower books, you will enjoy this one as well. Though it is helpful to have read the earlier books in this series, it's not absolutely necessary.

This is a rather enjoyable adventure set in the A Learning Experience universe by Christopher Nuttall. The book is pretty much freestanding although it helps if you have read the previous books. It is also somewhat different from the previous books in that it does not focus so much on the original “learning experience”. The Solar Union is firmly established and this is more of a classical beat-the-invading-aliens kind of an adventure. It is a good adventure but it lacks a bit of the originality that the first books had. This book introduces some new main characters and starts by spinning itself off from the core of the previous books by sending our hero to a naval base far away from Earth and the rest of the Solar Union.Naturally this backwater outpost where are hero are supposed to be “disposed off” turns out to not be so calm and quiet as expected and things heat up rather quickly. The story is fairly linear. Sure, there are the usual misfortunes and setbacks during the campaign but the core of the story is the, not so uncommon, one of encountering big bad aliens, build up your forces and then it is … clobbertime. It might not be the most original one but it is one that I like and, not surprisingly, it is well written as is generally the case when Christopher Nuttall does the writing. The main hero is a quite likable character, there are not too many political dumb[censored] or otherwise annoying people on the side of the good guys and there are plenty of good fleet action. I would say that readers that liked the Honor Harrington and Kris Longknife books probably will like this one quite a lot.

I've always said the only sin a book can commit is to be boring. I slogged through the first two books in this series and found the concepts intriguing. With each installment I kept hoping it would be better. This 3rd installment however commits the unforgivable sin -- it's just plain boring.Even looking past the blatant political subtext -- which I chose to interpret as the views of the characters within the book who espoused them -- this book just couldn't get up and running. Even the action seemed 'forced' and unimaginative. The characters and their actions are predictable with rarely a surprise to be had.I’ve purchased and read dozens of this author’s books and enjoyed them. I don’t give negative feedback lightly, but I would not recommend this book.

Average writing in the details, but a decent story arc.I like Nuttall's story arcs. The larger motivations and politics are good. The details, emotions, and personal relationships are a bit anamatronic, and suggest that everyone has an average level of intelligence and the same basic character set. "a resolved, semi stoic person lightly tapping reserves a who's willing to do what needs doing." and everyone has a growing respect for the people/person with whom they associate (be it friend, enemy, or family member) - change up the name, sex, and experience level, then add a tiny dash of some latching unique and you've got every character in the book.Nuttall needs to work on that stuff if he wants to become a great writer, IMO. But this work, much like the freighters depicted in it, does have a place in the scheme of things.

I usually like Chris's style and narratives. Straight forward, simple, gets right to the point without distractions. However, in this episode, he takes all those things I like a bit too far. The story is too simple, too predictable, and doesn't bother with any extra details. What should have taken chapters, happens in an instant; important details I would normally expect to hear about are missing. I very much got the impression that the author lost interest in this story half way through. I hesitate to read the next installment.

This is very much a metaphor of current events in the current world, especially the United States and our current foreign policy. IN fact in the Afterword he gives a lengthy and insightful analysis of our historical role and often shameful and careless treatment of third world countries, and why they are often quite hesitant to have anything to do with us. The book was published this year. Indeed he mentions Obama and apparently cannot figure out what he is doing and why. It would be helpful if our State Department could develop some long term strategy besides how to shake down foreign governments to sell off our national security.

I have truly enjoined this series. It developed so lifelike that I found myself wishing it were true! From the sci-fi side to the political side it was lots of fun! It is refreshing to know that there are some living in a Nanny State that gets it and how dangerous the PC politicians are! Well done, Christopher!

It is hard to think of this book as part of a series. It is really another concurrent story in the same universe. There are passing mentions of previous characters and elements but it really does stand alone. With that established, this is good military style scifi. The characters are interesting if less than fully developed, the action is well paced but not overly detailed. This will never stand up as great literature, but it is a fun and fast read.
