For the most part, I find Mark Sundberg's Verbal Behavior training manuals are well-written and are excellent resources. It's just disappointing that it doesn't state, "If the child doesn't respond correctly to modeling in conjunction with echoic, tact, or mand training in Discrete Trials alone, the therapist should collaborate with a speech pathologist on incorporating an oral motor/tactile prompt to elicit the verbal operant." Even though most--but not all--kids with autism respond without it, oral motor imitation is highly behavior analytic and used to be considered part of Lovaas therapy/Discrete Trials until the mid-2000s. The only forms of imitation defined in the book are "fine and gross motor imitation."

Very disappointed with this product. I have worked in the field of early interventions for children for many years and find the assessment to be very confusing, difficult to read, and difficult to determine what to teach a student. I was not impressed with the range of skills being assessed. There is almost nothing included about motor and daily living skills. As an occupational therapist, I know that these skills are critical to a child’s development. The limited scope of this assessment and the overly complicated skill assessment process leaves much to be desired. The level system suggests that one should develop different types of skills at a certain level prior to advancing the skills in other areas. We know that children with disabilities often develop certain skills much easier than others. Holding a child back in the areas of strength is clearly a bad idea. The Barriers Assessment is pretty much worthless. It mainly highlights weak skills (already identified in other parts of the assessment) and behavioral issues. I also bought the ABLLS-R and think it is so much better at helping parents understand what skills their child needs to learn. It provides a wider range of skills, is written in everyday language, and sequences the skills from easier to more difficult to learn. Parents are able to use the ABLLS-R without needing to pay a consultant to conduct an assessment of their child’s skills and identify skills they need to teach their child.

The paper quality of the book is good and so are the explanations. What I do not like about the author is the fact that he did not mention in the book description, here on Amazon, that evaluations cover milestones to be taught/developed only up to 48 months of age. When I bought this book, my son was almost six years old and there was nothing there that did not already know.

Using the task analysis section in the back of the protocol booklet is super helpful! Just a tip to my fellow graduate students of ABA out there!

As a student studying for her BCBA, this is the #1 tool for learning about verbal behavior. The best of any ABA/verbal behavior curriculum tool I've used so far.

I love this product! The guide outlines IEP goals based on the results in the student protocol. I use it with all of my students. It is not nearly as time consuming as the ABLLS-R. It is easy to navigate, understand and explain student progress.

Designed for children with autism, but it can be used for children with developmental delay; researched based, valid and reliable; informs directly and wisely the behavioral program .
